“Having an opportunity to work with the Poway Academy and participate in their Extern program has made an incredible difference for my business, Headlines for Hair. We have always believed in hiring from schools and training assistants/young talent as opposed to hiring experienced stylists. We now have the benefit of working with Externs which helps us to identify which students have the most potential.

The program that the Poway Academy has implemented has been very well organized. The placement of the student is what I call a "speed meeting" opportunity where a select group of salon owners conduct brief interviews, and the students have their chance to show what they’re made of. After, students are carefully matched to salons for their externship which is a win/win. The student receives "real world salon" experience and the salon gets to view work ethics, people skills, hair knowledge, etc.

We have in fact hired some of these students/Externs and they have become great members of our team. Lindsay, our first Extern, has been an amazing addition. The 8 weeks she spent with us during the externship made the transition into our salon an easy one. She also came equipped with outstanding technical skills in addition to having a strong business and marketing foundation. I attribute this to Lynelle Lynch, the school's owner, who has an amazing vision for this industry and is constantly looking for opportunities to raise the bar in salon and spa education. This out of the box program is just one of many great ideas she has brought to the industry.

The young talent is the future of our industry and having this program that the Poway Academy has implemented just gives the student one more opportunity to excel and help elevate this profession.
